The view of Owakudani Valley from the observatory is truly breathtaking. The desolate mountains and rising volcanic steam create a unique landscape that explains why the area was once called “Hell Valley.”

While riding the Hakone Ropeway, you can enjoy spectacular scenery throughout the journey — from Sounzan to Owakudani, the deep valley spreads out below, and from Owakudani toward Togendai, you can admire stunning views of Mount Fuji and Lake Ashi.

Additional information

  • The one-way ticket is valid only for the direction selected at the time of purchase. It can be used from the time of activation until the end of operating hours on the same day.
  • If multiple tickets are purchased in a single transaction, they cannot be used separately and will all be activated at the same time. If you wish to use them individually on different occasions, please make separate purchases.
  • Reservations can be made for up to 24 people, but they must be used by the same group and cannot be used individually. If you need to use the tickets separately, please purchase them individually.
  • All ropeway tickets allow you to get off at any station along the route.
  • Each gondola accommodates up to 18 passengers.
  • The gondolas operate at approximately one-minute intervals.
  • The travel time between each of the four Hakone Ropeway stations is approximately 10 minutes. (Travel time may vary depending on congestion.)
  • Substitute bus service will operate as follows:
  • Sounzan Station – Owakudani Station: approx. 10 minutes one way
  • Owakudani Station – Ubako Station – Togendai Station: approx. 15 minutes one way
  • *Buses operate approximately every 15 minutes.
  • Customers holding Hakone Freepass or other eligible transportation tickets may use the substitute bus.
  • Customers without a valid ticket are requested to use the regular Izu Hakone Bus service.
